Hair colors you'll be asking for in 2020

If you're considering a new hair color in 2020, there are a few things to keep in mind before choosing a shade. If you're going for a big change — like dark to light — you should know it's probably going to take a few trips. "I have to explain to clients and social media followers that to have, for example, Khloé Kardashian's blond takes time and commitment," Tracey Cunningham, celebrity colorist and creative consultant for Redken, told Glamour. "If you want a major change," she continued, "it may take more than one salon visit to achieve — especially if you want to keep your hair healthy."

It's also wise to heed your hairstylist's advice regarding color. It's advised to bring an inspo picture to the salon, but it's not always a good idea to be hellbent on the exact color. "It's optimal when we end up meeting halfway between their photo and my suggestions for what's best," Kari Hill, celebrity colorist for L'Oréal Paris, revealed.

2020 is all about contrasting hair colors

If your look is feeling stale, why not go for a bold hair color in 2020? Edward Tricomi, master hairstylist and co-founder of Warren Tricomi salons, said he expects more clients opting for contrasting colors. "If you're looking to achieve this look you want the contrast color to puddle in your hair," the expert told The List. "It won't be straight lines like traditional highlights, it's going to be more jagged, but it looks stunning." Can't quite picture it? "Billie Eilish would be a great example," Tricomi continued. 

After all, PopSugar dubbed Billie Eilish the "hair color icon we didn't know we needed" in 2019. Although we can't help but love her locks, it's important to remember that a look like hers is going to take time. "If you look at [Eilish's Instagram] pictures where she has some roots and some regrowth, you can see her natural color," hairstylist Stephanie Diaz told PopSugar. "It's not super dark, but way darker [than the colors she dyes it to]." If you're transitioning from a natural dark brown, Eilish's look may take as long as eight hours to accomplish. Still, it could just be worth it.

Consider going for a "turmeric latte" hair color in 2020

"Move over Pumpkin Spice!" Kate Reid, multi-award-winning colorist and design director for COLOR.ME by Kevin Murphy, told The List. There's a new, delicious style to try. "Trends like turmeric latte shades are now hitting high street," Reid explained. "As the months get cooler, the summer blondes get warmer with golds and apricots being more predominate."

In the bitterly cold months of 2020, a turmeric hair color can at least give you the appearance of warmth, even if it can't actually do much to heat you up. Reid revealed that these rich, golden shades also give the wearer an "instant glow and health" to the skin, which is something we'll be sorely lacking as the temperatures drop. The expert continued, saying, "This helps to enhance our features, makes us look well rested, plus adds color to our cheeks." According to Reid, this color pairs best with warm and neutral skin tones.

While just two percent of the world's population is born with red hair (including baby Archie according to mom, Meghan Markle), you don't need a ginger gene to pull off the super-rare shade. “The key to achieving the most natural red hair is sticking within the copper or copper-gold family,” explains Matrix celebrity stylist George Papanikolas, who works with the Kardashians, Hailey Baldwin, Shay Mitchell and Nicole Richie. “Any highlights should also stay on tone and in the warm family to accent and compliment the copper base.” 

As a former temporary redhead myself, admittedly one challenge can be maintaining your new shade at home. Red dyes notorious bleed faster than other colors, making faded an annoying but real reality. Celebrity hairstylist Chuck Amos— who works with Tracee Ellis Ross, Alicia Keys, Erykah Badu, Solange, and Lion Babe—suggests opting for tinted shampoo or conditioners for colored hair . “This way, you can enhance your color during the wash process,” he explains. “Even if you're born with red tones, you usually need color boost on a regular basis. 

Another sub-trend we’re predicting? How has pink evolved throughout the years? I think it’s primarily the mindset around pink that has changed. Not just for teens or springbreakers anymore, pastels have been getting bigger and bigger every year and pink has truly become a staple in the salon. Now the question isn’t so much, should I go pink but rather, which shade of pink is for me?

 

Go-to shade for creating pink: My current obsession is ROSE. So stunning. This shade is so versatile and can be intensified for a bolder result or mixed with NATURAL to create a dense, long lasting pastel.

 

What skin tone does this look best on? Anyone can wear ROSE as its actually quite neutral. On cooler skin tones, work with lighter pastel shades or cooler dusty pinks. Warm skin types glow with dense, antiqued shades of pink or rose golds. Pink, and pastels in general, is such a huge fashion statement and these shades are timeless worn correctly. You will fall in love once you try it!

A Shade We're Still Swooning Over From The 2019 Met Gala!

The 2019 Met Gala, themed “Camp: Notes On Fashion,” set the bar high when it came to making an entrance. While artists like Lady Gaga made a splash, other starlets took on a subtle approach that had just as much impact.

From donning extravagant outfits to changing up their hair colour, anything goes when it comes to the Red Carpet at the Met Gala. While some starlets wore wigs and literal over-the-top headpieces, some chose a wash of colour instead! This year, Bohemian Rhapsody star Lucy Boynton turned heads as she floated down the carpet in her Prada dress and JADE hair to match.
